17-10-2015 - Dutch Designers Magazine (English version), published on 17 October 2015
The sixth edition of Dude, Dutch Designers Magazine, in which Ellen Schindler talks about personal growth and business development.
'Nothing is certain. Everything can go amazingly well. But it can also blow up in your face, not work, get staid, or there may not be enough time. The trick is to make things go your way. To make things happen', says Ellen Schindler (1968), partner and managing director at Kossmann.dejong, an agency specialising in exhibition and experience design.
'YOU CANNOT DO THIS JOB IF
IT IS NOT COMPLETELY ALIGNED
WITH WHO YOU ARE, WITH
YOUR OWN DEVELOPMENT'
'Entrepreneurship is something that needs to grow', says Ellen, who is playing in the 'Champions League' of exhibition and experience designers. 'In the end, it is almost a kind of game, and it's a game that can be learned.' In Dude she tells about how she tries to convey this message to the next generations of designers, by setting up a scalable curriculum under the name of Business Your Design that exposes design students to the practical aspects of creative entrepreneurship over the course of their four-year study.
'Creative industries' is the collective name for a sector that isn't actually a coherent industry, but a colourful collection of practices and disciplines. The top sector policy complelled them to join forces. Lobby organisations, representatives, knowledge institutes and advocacy groups were put in position. This feature article gives an insight into the organisations and what they do, and raises the question whether their roles match the needs of the sector.
Also in this Dude the designs of thirty new-fangled dudes in the first graduates special, the career of Ralph Nauta, a minicourse in customer relations, the Amsterdam and London based design service and research innovation agency STBY, and Eugene Bay and Graham Sturt talking about their new roles at VBAT.
This edition of Dude is the first to appear in English, made possible by Creative Industries Fund NL. It is available free of charge online. The printed edition will be distributed to international stakeholders.
