Working in the Netherlands

If you are a designer or design student from outside the European Union (EU), and you wish to work temporarily or permanently in the Netherlands, please read this information.

The Dutch government maintains a highly restrictive admission policy for qualified non-EU knowledge workers. The following assets will at least be required, to be able to start a likely succesful admission procedure:

- A potential employer who is willing to spend time and energy on your application
- A potential job with a regular salary; internships do not qualify
- A good lawyer specialised in this line of work could be helpful

In short, acquiring a staying and working permit for the Netherlands it is not easy, but also not impossible. The best way to achieve this is making the necessary contacts while staying in Holland during a tourist visit. Bring your portfolio and ample hand outs of your curriculum. Use the time you are here to make as many portfolio visits as possible. If you already have a network of collegues and professional friends ask them to introduce you in the designbureaus and studios of your choice.

You can find job offers and internships on our website (mostly in Dutch):

An overview of design agencies can be found on bno.nl/lidzoeken.

Once you get a serious job offer, you can start the admission procedure together with your future employer. Good luck!
